Short answer: you can demonstrate that your name, address, phone, schedule, services, and URLs are consistent across the surfaces you measure. You can demonstrate that the first-party conflict rate has decreased or that external priority profiles have been aligned. You cannot automatically prove that entity resolution caused better ranking, more AI citations or more leads. These outcomes have multiple causes and require separate experimental designs.
What does entity resolution mean in this context
We do not use the term as a synonym for a proprietary score. We operationally define it as the ability to identify the same business or location without material conflicts in the relevant sources.
In practice, this means coherent relationships between brand, organization, location, services and external profiles.
Baselines
Choose locations before analysis and save for each:
- canonical name;
- legitimate aliases;
- address or service area;
- telephone and its rule;
- schedule;
- services;
- canonical URL;
- Organization/Local Business markup;
- priority external profiles;
- the number of material conflicts;
- the date of the last check.
Keep the raw values, not just the final verdict.
Metric 1: first-party conflict rate
Numerator: first-party attributes with material conflict. Denominator: eligible attributes from the audited areas.
Do not include `not applicable' in the denominator. A business without a public address should not be penalized for not having a displayed address.
Metric 2: external critical-profile consistency
Select profiles before measuring and keep the same list between rounds. The numerator can be the number of profiles without material conflict, the denominator the total of eligible priority profiles.
An obscure directory should not be added retrospectively just to change the percentage.
Metric 3: material conflict severity
Not all differences matter equally. A wrong address or an old program can produce a wrong decision. A punctuation difference in the name, no.
Report P0, P1, P2 and P3 separately.
Metric 4: naming stability
In a query set or external audit, track whether the brand and location are named consistently. This metric is useful after a rebrand, merger or change of headquarters.
Metric 5: time-to-resolution
It measures the time between finding and rechecking the corrected surface. `Ticket sent' does not mean resolved.
For external sources, keep `external unresolved' if you have no control.
Metric 6: owner coverage
Numerator: critical attributes with defined owner. Denominator: total critical attributes. A business may have accurate data today, but without an owner it will accumulate drift again.
Observation window
First-party entity resolution can be measured immediately after implementation. External profiles and Search/AI outputs can have different lags.
Do not force a single range for all metrics.
What you can demonstrate directly
Can you demonstrate that:
- two first-party pages no longer display different programs;
- structured data reflects the page;
- priority profiles use the current address;
- the old alias has been removed from controllable surfaces;
- remediation time reduced.
These results are verifiable and do not depend on ranking theories.
What remains correlation
If Search traffic increases after identity cleanup, there is a temporal association, but you haven't proven causation. In the same period, seasonality, new reviews, backlinks, campaigns or engine updates may appear.
If the brand is cited more often in AI responses, the same caution applies.
False-attribution risks
- relocation;
- rebranding;
- seasonal program;
- local campaigns;
- new reviews;
- PR;
- new competitor;
- website redesign;
- independent changes scheme;
- Search/AI changes;
- query set changed.
Keep a change log.
How do you compare two periods
It reports both the rate and the absolute number of findings. If you have reduced the population of audited profiles, a better percentage may just be the effect of the denominator.
For example: "3 P1 conflicts out of 40 eligible attributes, compared to 11 out of 42 in baseline" is much clearer than "entity score increased by 19 points".
How do you handle legitimate variations
A central call center and a local number can coexist. One location may have a different schedule than another. Service area may be more relevant than administrative address.
It defines the rule up front and marks legitimate differences as such. Entity resolution does not mean artificial uniformity.
Comparison group
If you have multiple locations, you can track one group where you apply the complete workflow and another where you maintain the existing process, provided you don't intentionally keep material errors.
Compare the directions, but don't make the difference a universal proof.
Stop criterion
Move the program into monitoring when first-party material conflicts are rare, priority profiles have clear status, owner coverage is high, and new rounds no longer discover new problem types.
Don't expand the audit just to produce more data.
How do you validate the quality of the classification
Entity resolution also depends on how evaluators classify differences. Periodically take a sample of findings and ask two evaluators to decide independently whether the difference is material conflict',legitimate variation', stale' ornot applicable'. If agreement is poor, the rubric is the problem, not necessarily the data.
Keep concrete examples for each class and don't retroactively change definitions without versioning the methodology. Thus, comparisons between quarters remain interpretable.
How do you deal with population change
If you open new locations, close locations, or remove directories from the priority set, report the effect of the population change separately. A better percentage can only occur because you have eliminated the difficult cases.
Claim ledger
- FACT/EVIDENCE: Google documents LocalBusiness and Organization structured data for distinct entities.
- PRACTITIONER GUIDANCE: consistency, severity and time-to-resolution are verifiable metrics.
- INFERENCE: reducing ambiguity can contribute to more stable external representations.
- NOT PROVEN: a universal causal relationship between entity resolution and ranking, AI citations or leads.
Conclusion
Local entity resolution can be rigorously measured without a mysterious score. It shows what you fixed and how stable the system remains. Treat Search, AI and business outcomes as separate series until you have a design that can support attribution.
