Short answer: internal linking can be tested without inventing a "topical authority score". Google recommends crawlable links and contextual anchor text and uses the links for page discovery. In professional services, useful experiment checks whether the paths between diagnosis, methodology, proof and offer become clearer and canonical pages receive better context.

Hypothesis

For clusters with clear ownership, the controlled addition of contextual links to the logical next step will improve navigation and may be associated with better discovery/Search performance than in a comparable unchanged cluster.

The main result is navigation. Search is an external outcome.

Population

Choose two service clusters with close maturity and seasonality. Avoid comparing a new service to one that has years of backlinks.

Baselines

For each cluster save:

  • Eligible URLs;
  • canonical intent;
  • incoming contextual links;
  • outgoing contextual links;
  • orphan/near-orphan pages;
  • click paths;
  • Search queries;
  • relevant conversions.

The intervention

In the treated cluster you only add links that continue the user's task. Each referral must have a source, target, anchor and reason.

Do not change title, content and global navigation at the same time if you want to isolate the test.

The comparison group

Keep a comparable cluster without the new linking rule for the first window. If there is a broken link or factual error, fix it and note the deviation.

Metric 1: qualified click-through

It measures clicks on the links entered, but ranks the destinations. A click to the next relevant step is more useful than an accidental click on a long list.

Metric 2: orphan reduction

Intervention can reduce near-orphan pages. This is a straightforward metric and easy to re-audit.

Metric 3: path completion

Track whether users get from problem to methodology, proof and service page without dead ends.

It does not assume that all routes must end in the form.

Metric 4: Search observation

Track indexing, queries and landing pages. Keep a log of other changes.

If both clusters grow similarly, the explanation is probably not just linking.

Metric 5: collision behavior

Check if the new links clarify the owner or, on the contrary, alternately send to two pages with the same promise.

Internal linking does not fix cannibalization if ownership remains unclear.

Observation window

For browsing, data can appear quickly. For Search, use a sufficient window for crawling and variation.

Define the interval before the experiment.

Confounders

  • content updates;
  • backlinks;
  • PR;
  • seasonality;
  • redesign;
  • campaigns;
  • new pages;
  • Search updates.

Stop criteria

Stop if links increase confusion, wrong-language targets, redirects or concentration risk. Stop the interpretation if the groups are no longer comparable.

What does a positive result mean?

Fewer dead ends, more relevant routes and clearer ownership are direct results. Search lift can support the hypothesis, but it is not exclusive proof.

Rollback

Keep the manifest of the links entered. If the test results in regression, only retract the documented batch, do not reset other changes in the site.

If a cluster has hundreds of pages, you don't need to manually inspect each link. Sample by page type, funnel position and age. Keep the same method before and after the intervention.

For commercial pages and core methodologies, use a higher review rate. A single wrong target on an important page can count more than dozens of correct links in the archive.

How do you differentiate the useful click from the accidental click

Not every click on an anchor demonstrates value. See if the user continues the task, returns immediately, or reaches a dead end. For professional services, a click to the methodology or case study may be more relevant than a generic click to the homepage.

When a negative result is useful

If the new links do not change navigation and increase redundancy, you have evidence that the proposed rule is not worth expanding. Keep this result in your playbook and don't relaunch the same tactic under a different name without a new hypothesis.

Not every article has to send directly to the form or service page. Sometimes the next logical step is an explainer, a methodology or a case. It measures whether the path makes sense for user intent, not whether each page "converts".

For commercial pages, it also tracks quality of entry: where the user is coming from and what information they went through before. A less frequent but better qualified click can be a superior result to a high CTR from overly aggressive links.

Stop condition

If material orphan pages are resolved, ownership is clear, and new proposed links become predominantly redundant, stop the rollout. Healthy internal linking also has an editorial saturation point.

Monitoring threshold

After the priority routes are clean, switch to periodic audit and resume the intervention only after new pages, consolidations or offer changes.

Final note

It keeps the exact manifest of tested links so that the next round starts from the same base and doesn't confuse old links with new intervention.

Claim ledger

  • FACT/EVIDENCE: Google recommends crawlable HTML links and contextual anchor text.
  • FACT/EVIDENCE: links help discover pages.
  • PRACTITIONER GUIDANCE: internal linking must be tested on routes and ownership, not raw counts.
  • NOT PROVEN: a universal score of topical authority produced by internal links.

Conclusion

An editorial A/B of internal linking is valuable when the change can be described and reversed. Measure routes and ownership before looking for a ranking story. In professional services, this is the test that keeps the architecture tied to the client's decision.
